THE GREAT KAROO TO COAST MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE TOUR - 11 DAYS:

View of The Gamkas Kloof On the Swartberg Pass Riding the Groot Karoo

Visor View

This exhilarating moto-tour will deliver big-time on adventure- and gravel travel delight. The tour departs from Cape Town, the Mother City, and soon ascends the magnificent Franschoek Pass. Once we are in the countryside, we will endeavour to avoid asphalt roads as far as possible. Our route winds through the beautiful country roads and mountain passes of the Klein (Small) and Groot (Great) Karoo and is sheer adventure riding pleasure.

Some of the gravel highlights of the tour are the  Rooiberg Pass, Swartberg Meander,  Prince Alfred Pass, the  ride through the Knysna Forest, the Baviaanskloof (Baboon Gorge) with its special valleys, tucked away between mountains with steep passes, water crossings and narrow gravel roads set in stunning surrounds.

Then there is the magic of riding the historic "Swartberg Pass" and detour into the Gamkaskloof, better known as the "Hell". The "Hell" will capture your soul and it will be difficult to escape its allure. The Great Karoo and Cedarberg  rides that follow with their unique landscapes and challenges has a magic of its own

The Great Karoo to Coast Motorcycle Adventure Tour is a high impact, mainly gravel travel tour, taking in some of the most scenic destinations, roads and mountain passes the Western and Eastern Cape has on offer. You will require previous gravel riding experience to enjoy this tour.

Detailed Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town - The Mother City
Day 2: We explore the Cape Peninsula on motorcycle and visit Table Mountain, Boulders Penguin sanctuary and Cape Point
Day 3:

At the break of day we slip over the Helshoogte Pass and continue on towards the magnificent Franschoek Pass. Beyond the town of Montagu it is all glorious gravel roads through the southern section of the Anysberg reserve. Before the last shift of the day, we stop at Ronnies, an infamous bikers hangout on Route 62 for refreshments.

We ride to Van Wyksdorp and over the glorious, all gravel Rooiberg Pass into the Port Wine capital of South Africa – Calitzdorp

Day 4:

Today will start with a beautiful gravel road that follows the scenic Matjiesrivier meander to the foot of the Swartberg Pass. We are now in the heart of the ostrich capital of the world. The breathtakingly beautiful Oude Murargie road will take us into the quaint town of De Rust.

We follow more enjoyable gravel roads interspersed with short asphalt sections to the top of the Price Alfred Pass. From here, it is all gravel and one of the best rides of the tour. The road will eventually take us on a magical ride through the indigenous Knysna Forests and will spit us out on the Indian Ocean coastal town of Knysna, our overnight stop.

Day 5: Today’s ride is a relaxing ride, mostly on asphalt and  through scenic coastal towns such as Plettenberg Bay, Keurboomstrand, Naturesvalley etc.  The route is known as the “Garden Route” with beautiful indigenous forests lining the sides of the road.  At Stormsrivier we will line up for a unique,  forest canopy tour   before we continue our journey to Patensie, our overnight stop. Arriving early and weather permitting, we undertake a late afternoon safari drive and hope to spot some of Africa’s unique game species.
Day 6: We journey inland to conquer the spectacular Baviaans Kloof (Baboon Gorge) mega reserve. Rhinoceros have recently been reintroduced into the reserve and with some luck we might meet up with them. The Baviaanskloof is any adventure rider's dream with steep and narrow mountain passes, river crossings, all set in beautiful, unspoilt, nature.
Day 7: We head for the historic "Swartberg Pass"(Black Mountain Pass), riding through some of the harshest and beautiful Karoo's landscapes. Upon "summiting" the "Swartberg Pass" we detour into the "Hell" (Gamkaskloof). After a magnificent , all gravel ride with steep little passes here and there, we reach our rewarding and remote overnight stop in the heart of the "Hell"
Day 8: We throttle out of the "Hell" and down the awesome "Swartberg Pass" into the historic town of Oudtshoorn. From here we cruise through the Huisriver Pass and awesome Seweweekspoort gravel road towards the Great Karoo. An easy day’s ride with a relaxing lodge stay.
Day 9: The Great Karoo is calling us. An all gravel journey into the heart of the Great Karoo with a stunning, somewhat steep, pass to contend with. A relaxing day’s ride with ample opportunity to explore the region with its harsh beauty.
Day 10: Another awesome gravel ride down the Ouberg Pass into the Tankwa Karoo. Before we arrive in Cape Town today, we still have to conquer the Katbakkies Pass, Gydo Pass, Mitchells Pass and the spectacular Bainskloof Pass. A suitable end to a great tour.
